Karakoram International University

The Karakoram International University (KIU) is located in Gilgit, the administrative capital and largest town of the Gilgit-Baltistan of Pakistan. The Gilgit-Baltistan has the unique distinction of being the converging point of three of the mightiest mountain ranges in the world, namely, the Himalaya, Karakoram, and Hindu Kush. These ranges have many of the world’s highest peaks and the world’s largest concentration of glaciers outside the Polar Regions. In the Karakoram alone 30 peaks soar over 24,000 feet (7,500 m) and culminate in the 28,250 feet (8,612 m) high K2, second only to Mt. Everest in elevation. Sheer rock walls and ravines, plunging thousands of vertical feet down to the rivers flowing below, mark the scenery. The valleys and mountains of Gilgit-Baltistan present exceptional challenges and opportunities. Karakoram International University

The University was established in 2002 by a charter from the Federal Government on the instructions of President Pervez Musharraf. The University is situated against theatrical conditions of steep mountains at the confluence of the Gilgit and Hunza rivers. The main and currently the only campus of the university is located in Gilgit, the central town of the entire Gilgit-Baltistan. Gilgit has an airport, providing daily flights to Islamabad, punctuated only by adverse weather conditions. The famous Karakoram Highway (KKH), formerly known as part of the Silk Route, runs all the way from Islamabad to the Khunjarab Pass (the Chinese border), passing through Gilgit. An offshoot of the KKH connects Gilgit with Skardu (Baltistan).

According to the charter of the University, admission is open to persons of either race, creed, color, or domicile who are academically qualified for admission to the courses offered by the University. No such person shall be denied the privileges of the University on the grounds only of gender, religion, creed, caste, race, class, color, or domicile.
